Gray Motorsports reaches third consecutive final with Sonoma runner-up

(8-3-2015) SONOMA, CA – Gray Motorsports is picking up steam as their stable of Chevrolet Camaros powers through the second half of the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. On Sunday at the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals, second-year competitor Jonathan Gray raced to the final round with a mixture of good fortune, excellent starting line driving, and a strong racecar. Brother and teammate Shane Gray set top speed of the meet during qualifying and put an exclamation point on it with top speed of raceday in his powerful Gray Motorsports Chevy. Jonathan's final was the third in a row for Gray Motorsports, who put engine customer Larry Morgan in the winner's circle last weekend in Denver with his FireAde Racing Camaro. Morgan was also a finalist in Chicago the race prior.

Jonathan, who has one win on his scorecard... [Read More]

Line clinches Countdown spot en route to semis in Sonoma

(8-3-2015) SONOMA, CA – Jason Line was just one round short of taking home the trophy on Sunday at the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals, and the driver of the blue Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro certainly wanted that Sonoma Wally, but he leaves California's wine country with something else nearly as valuable: a ticket to fight for the biggest Wally trophy of all in NHRA's 2015 Countdown to the Championship.

Line started from the No. 2 position in a true show of rejuvenation for his Ken Black-owned Summit Racing-branded Camaro. In the first round of eliminations in Sonoma, the second-generation drag racer knocked out young Pro Stock newbie Aaron Strong, a noted Division 6 Comp racer, with a 6.518-second pass at 211.53 mph. Continuing his quest for the trophy, Line met up with KB Racing teammate Bo Butner in the quarterfinals. It was the first... [Read More]

Walczak, Webb, Ward, Beaven, Martina & Raiser score “Sunday Nostalgia” wins at Lancaster

(8-3-2015) LANCASTER, NY – Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway’s “Sunday Nostalgia” reunion weekend culminated on Sunday with a sun-splashed day of racing action. Fans were treated to six classes of classic race cars and a Clutch Artists of Buffalo car show on the infield of the stock car oval.

The highlight of the day was the Nite Cappe Steak and Seafood Restaurant and Bar Top Eliminator class presented by Grainy's Automotive and Lackawanna Products. Top Eliminator featured the eight fastest cars on property, running heads up on a pro tree. The field was paired down to the 1932 Bantam of Steve Walczak of Rochester and the 1933 Willys of Frank Malvaso. Malvaso got off the line quicker in the finals, but Walczak was able to drive by him to score the win with an elapsed time of 4.60 seconds at... [Read More]

McGaha earns first Pro Stock win in Sonoma

(8-2-2015) SONOMA, CA – Chris McGaha and the Harlow Sammons Racing Pro Stock team couldn't have had a better weekend at the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals. McGaha, driver of the swift silver Harlow Sammons Chevrolet Camaro, earned the sixth low qualifier award of his career and topped off the weekend with his very first Pro Stock win. It was a dream that McGaha and his team had long wished for.

"This was 30 years in the making, and let me tell you, it's been something," said McGaha, a former Comp Eliminator driver in NHRA's sportsman ranks who made his Pro Stock debut at the 2011 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and ran a limited schedule until he upped the game to full-time Pro Stock racing in 2014. "All the years we ran Comp Eliminator, watching my dad race and then doing it myself, you always leave the house thinking that maybe this is the weekend.... [Read More]

Wieserner, Carlson, Crane & Karosik take Saturday wins during Lancaster's Nostalgia Weekend

(8-2-2015) LANCASTER, NY – Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway hosted the second day of its “Sunday Nostalgia” Drags and Reunion weekend on Saturday with the Gasser Racing Series (GRS) taking center stage.

GRS hosted two classes of racing with a Gassers only class for cars produced before 1967 and a Mod Eliminator class. In the GRS Gassers, Steve Wieserner of Hamburg, NY took the victory in his 1948 Austin Healey over Rod Pontlitz. Jim Carlson of Clarence, NY picked up the win in GRS Mod ET after Chris Plennert triggered a red light in the final round.

In other Saturday action, veteran Joe Karosik of Depew, NY earned the win Competition Eliminator. Karosik piloted his 1972 Chevy Nova to victory after Greg Kerl broke out in his final run. Paul Crane was victorious in Little Eliminator... [Read More]

Anderson secures berth in NHRA's Countdown to the Championship

(8-2-2015) SONOMA, CA – Raceday at the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals was very productive for Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson. Although he did not see as many win lights as he had hoped, the driver of the red Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro accomplished something mighty in the first round when he reeled in enough points to clinch a spot in the 2015 Countdown to the Championship. The six-race playoffs will begin in Charlotte in September.

The position is even more treasured for Anderson as he missed the Countdown last year after sitting out the first five races as he recovered from heart surgery. This season the four-time NHRA Pro Stock world champion is in a far better position and is leading the points as the tour leaves Sonoma.

Anderson took over the points lead in Norwalk when he won the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA... [Read More]

Enders determined to bounce back after second-round exit in Sonoma

(8-2-2015) SONOMA, CA – Erica Enders and her Elite Motorsports team are more determined than ever after a second-round exit in the NHRA Sonoma Nationals on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

Her Elite team was making its first appearance at Sonoma Raceway, and Enders was racing here for the first time since 2012. Still, she qualified No. 9 and advanced to the second round before bowing out to No. 1 qualifier and eventual race winner Chris McGaha.

"We've got nothing to be ashamed of," Enders said. "We're going to load up and go to the next race. My guys are the most determined bunch I've ever met. Right now our day is over, but where are all three of my crew chiefs (Rick and Rickie Jones and Mark Ingersoll) and my team owner (Richard Freeman)? They're in the lounge, going over notes and trying to figure out how to get better.... [Read More]

Kerl, Sobczynski, Ricketson, Salemi & Morrissey win at Lancaster

(8-2-2015) LANCASTER, NY – Lancaster National Speedway & Dragway kicked off “Sunday Nostalgia” Weekend on Friday night with its regular Franco’s Pizza Friday Night IHRA Drag Racing program.

In the spirit of the weekend a special Nostalgia Eliminator class was added to the show for cars from 1980 or earlier. Clay Ricketson of Marilla, NY topped the field of retro racers as he picked up his fourth win of the season overall in his 1974 Dodge Dart. Ricketson defeated Mark Santucci in the finals

The Ricketson family, however, was denied in Mod ET as Reid Ricketson lost to Jeff Kerl of Cheektowaga, NY in the final round. Ricketson broke out by .001 seconds to hand the win to Kerl, who ran a 6.577 on a 6.57 dial-in. The Ricketsons have won six out of the nine races in Mod ET this year.

Beckman, Brown, McGaha and Krawiec race to NHRA Sonoma Nationals victories

(8-2-2015) SONOMA, CA – Jack Beckman finished off a dominating weekend at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals on Sunday by racing to the Funny Car victory.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Sonoma Raceway. It is the first time in NHRA history where all four No. 1 qualifiers went on to win the race.

Beckman kept alive his hopes of becoming the eighth driver to sweep the Western Swing and only the second in Funny Car to accomplish the feat when he sped past Tommy Johnson Jr. to claim his fifth victory of the season and 20th of his career. The NHRA Western Swing, an NHRA summertime tradition since 1989, begins in Denver, moves on through Sonoma and finishes in Seattle in a three-week stretch.

Coughlin races to Sonoma semifinals in 2015 return to Pro Stock

(8-2-2015) SONOMA, CA – JEGS.com driver Jeg Coughlin Jr. picked up right where he left off in his 2015 debut in Pro Stock, racing to the semifinals of the NHRA Sonoma Nationals on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

Coughlin, driving a Chevrolet Camaro for Stockseth Racing and Elite Motorsports, scored a holeshot victory in the second round but came up short against No. 1 qualifier Chris McGaha in the semifinals despite another stellar reaction time.

"I was pretty happy with it," Coughlin said of his driving Sunday. "I had a little attention-getter first round. Some days you don't get away with those but today we did. I knew to get up on the wheel and do what I love to do. I came back with a respectable .007 and .010, but obviously we weren't able to close the door.

"I've got a lot of faith in this team. They've... [Read More]

Red-light ends chances of Western Swing sweep for FireAde's Larry Morgan

(8-2-2015) SONOMA, CA – A week after scoring a thrilling holeshot victory in Denver, FireAde Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan lost on a red-light in the first round of the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Morgan left .017-second too soon in his race against Vincent Nobile, ending his Sunday at Sonoma Raceway too soon.

"I was up on the wheel," Morgan said. "It wasn't about who I was racing or anything like that. We have had some issues with the engine this weekend, and I just got behind the eight ball in qualifying. The car was missing and all kinds of stuff, and I just had a hard time with the way it felt.

"I did what I thought was good. I didn't even know I red-lit until I put it in 3rd gear. I looked up and his win light was on."

Morgan drove well in winning the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals last weekend... [Read More]

Enders ready to make noise in rare bottom-half start

(8-1-2015) SONOMA, CA – With her Elite Motorsports team making its first appearance at Sonoma Raceway, It would be easy to blame a relatively poor qualifying performance for Erica Enders at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals this weekend on their lack of notes for the track, but Enders and her team -- the defending NHRA Pro Stock World Champions -- won't make any excuses.

"We certainly don't have data from out here," said Enders, who qualified for her 100th consecutive race. "But we can always take weather and track conditions and compare them to other places we've raced at. I guess we're behind the other teams in that aspect, but at the same time, that is no excuse.

"My guys are the best, and we'll do our damndest to prove it tomorrow."

Enders qualified No. 9 with a pass of 6.534 seconds at 212.03 mph despite her team... [Read More]

Anderson eager for raceday at Team Summit's favored Sonoma Raceway

(8-1-2015) SONOMA, CA – Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing Pro Stock team are eager to get Sunday started at the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Anderson is the Pro Stock driver to have earned the most wins at the beautiful facility situated in the Napa Valley, and he would certainly like to lengthen his record on raceday. He will get his shot as he starts from the No. 3 position and lines up against Alex Laughlin, who is making his Pro Stock debut at the event in the Gas Monkey Garage Camaro.

Anderson began qualifying with a very quick 6.507-second pass at 212.16 mph that temporarily held a new Sonoma Raceway track record for elapsed time. A six-time Sonoma low qualifier, Anderson ended the first day of the event with a 6.517, 211.79 that was third-quickest of the session, and he was No. 3 on Friday. In Saturday's... [Read More]

McGaha earns sixth career No. 1 in Sonoma, fourth of the season

(8-1-2015) SONOMA, CA – Saturday in Sonoma turned up aces for Chris McGaha and the Harlow Sammons Pro Stock team. McGaha, of Odessa, Texas, was right at home in the California sunshine as he raced to the top of the pack on Friday and held onto the top spot through all four sessions at the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Starting from the pole for the sixth time in his career and fourth time this season, McGaha will race V. Gaines in the first round of eliminations at Sonoma Raceway.

Piloting his Harlow Racing Chevrolet Camaro crew-chiefed by Brian "Lump" Self, second-generation drag racer McGaha came into qualifying with a conservative yet effective 6.530-second pass at 211.93 mph and blistered the track with a track record setting 6.499-second pass at 212.36 mph in the later Friday session.
